Who We Are

All of us at Emergent Seed are creatives, committed to our work and to our communities. We come from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, crafts, and day-jobs, and with various ties to the Greater DC Metro area. We’re thrilled to have this opportunity to review and lift up the work of our creative local community.

Our team includes screeners and senior reviewers who are practicing artists in their creative fields, some with significant leadership experience. We thank them for their time and expertise to help review and select candidates for both microgrants, broadcasts and other events.

Team

Adrianna (Adri) Smith founded Emergent Seed. She is a writer and poet living in Washington, D.C. whose work has been published in the Washington Post, the Atlantic, Poet Lore, and Beltway Poetry Quarterly. Adri started and runs Makars, a free monthly open mic series that brings together high-quality, genre-diverse performers in different locations across DC. The name "Makar" comes from the Scottish word meaning both 'maker' and 'poet'. Makars has showcased amazing local talent and in less than a year has attracted a community of over 500 people.

Inspired by this spirit of creativity and community-building, Adri is dedicated to finding ways, especially during this coronavirus crisis, to support both the kinds of emerging artists she regularly saw at Makars, as well as those yet to be discovered.
